How to get effective website promotion, SEO for small & medium size businesses
For small and medium sized businesses, deciding which company to use to promote their website is becoming an increasing nightmare. Most SME’s now have websites, although these tend to vary widely in terms of build quality and content. Many have dabbled in DIY search engine optimzation; many have not the faintest notion of how to begin. The obvious answer is to visit google and seek specialist advice or companies who specialize in search engine optimisation, website promotion, SEO or whatever terminology you prefer. Now the fun really begins…our SME is faced with a mind-numbing array of possibilities; solutions, quick fixes, assessments, guaranteed results…how can he possibly decide between all this information overload? Our advice is to ignore the hype and go for old-fashioned common sense. Find an option that you feel fits your needs, and ask them for examples of similar projects they have completed. Then contact their customers and find out from the horses mouth. We encourage all our prospective SEO customers to speak to our existing clients BEFORE they come on board. We don’t prime any clients for this; we are satisfied to let our results hopefully speak for us.
Website design for small or medium size business; what has William Shakespeare got to do with it anyway?
In a business analogy, when Shakespeare wrote in Romeo & Juliet "What's in a name? That which we call a rose. By any other name would smell as sweet." we could be forgiven for thinking that the bard has once again hit the proverbial nail right on its head. Just because a business is called 'A1 Superior Plumbing Solutions' doesn’t guarantee it will provide a far better service and skill set than one entitled 'Joe's Plumbing'. Which is true of course. So, you’re asking...what’s this got to do with website design for small or medium size business Well, here’s why; If 'Joe's Plumbing' is considering promoting his services online, he will first of all need to buy a website address, or 'domain name', and there will be a very strong temptation to choose 'www.joesplumbing.com'. After all, as the Bard has pointed out so eloquently, it’s not what you’re called that matters, its what’s beneath the name that really cuts the mustard. Wrong. At least wrong for sure if you want your website to compete to the best of its ability in terms of how it ranks on the search results on google. This is one of the most common mistakes made by SME's. Lets say 'Joe' is based in Boston and operates mainly in that area. A far better domain would be 'www.boston-plumber.com' or 'www.plumbers-boston'. Having the key words or phrase in your domain name is a real benefit and advantage in relation to how your website will be indexed and returned on google. If you are an SME, and are looking to get online, its well worth taking professional advice from a proven website design/website promotion company right from the outset. Small things like this can have a huge impact on how well your website ultimately performs. We are www.thisworks.co.uk, specialist advertising and marketing for small & medium sized businesses.
Just how important is Googles Page Rank for effective website promotion, SEO?
If, like me, you love your work so much that business becomes pleasure and much of your spare time is spent exploring ideas to improve the business, and if you actively monitor your website promotion, SEO, then you will no doubt have pondered long and hard about how to improve your website’s google page rank. Why? Because bigger PR equates to higher ranking. Doesn’t it? Hmmm…well actually its not panacea its cracked up to be. Our own site has for some strange reason only known to Googles Algorithm, recently been downgraded from a PR4 to a PR3 [despite the fact that we have consistently added top quality content during this period] yet we still maintain all our number one rankings that we did before the PR drop. Moral of the story…concentrate on top quality content and think of PR as a sort of beauty contest score which is nice to have but is not the prime determining factor in how google returns its top listings.
Why choose to bang your head against the wall with your website promotion, SEO
We get many enquiries from businesses who approach us asking if we can get their website to perform better on Google’s natural listings. However, so often when we analyse their website, its architecture, content and navigation, it becomes apparent that from a website promotion, SEO perspective, the site has been almost dead from birth due to the fact they are trying to compete in niches where the key phrases they are targeting are just too competitive. Yes, you can spend countless hours dogging your successful competition; trying to mimic their link strategy; paraphrasing their keyword density, weight & frequency. Trust me…don’t bother. Instead, spend some time researching slightly longer keyword tail phrases and get yourself established there. You may well be amazed at the results. Oh..it's also a lot less painful.
Five easy ways to get your website noticed. Website promotion, SEO the smart way
This methodology will work for both new businesses, and also existing websites where the existing website promotion, SEO strategy has so far failed to muster any tangible ascent up the search engine rankings.
CAREFULLY chose a keyword rich domain. No more than four words. Use hypens to separate each word. [Don’t worry, the hyphens will not hinder your recognition by Google in any way] For those who already have a website, but it isn’t indexed well on google, its worth considering starting from scratch as above. Collate good quality content, which is THEMED on the topic of your keyword rich domain. There is lots of free advice on the internet as to how to structure this content to maximise its search engine friendliness. Create an XML site map, and submit to google. At the same time verify your site with google also. Ensure you also set up Google analytics so you can monitor usage and visitor behaviours. Heres the surprising one….now do nothing for 2 months. Don’t go rushing around like a headless chicken garnering meaningless links, nor burning the midnight oil submitting your site to Directories. Chill out. Let Google do its thing. All the time, observe what is happening in regards to visitor behaviour. Are there any keywords cropping up in the analytics that you can reverse engineer into your sites content? Are some pages seemingly being favoured over others? If so, can you identify why? Maybe your navigation isn’t spot on…or maybe the neglected pages are lightweight in terms of quality content.
Once you are satisfied that all the above is now set up correctly, now look to begin adding new quality content. Preferably whole new themed pages. Also begin to seek out high quality websites whose content is related [but NOT direct competition] and approach them personally to see if they will offer a link to your website. [you may have to give one back] Don’t use link farms under any circumstances, and look to grow your links gradually on a ‘quality not quantity’ basis.
Why poor website promotion, SEO should lead to a complete website re-build
Often, when a new client comes to us asking to re-design their existing website, a fundamental issue arises; do we try and improve what is already there, or start from scratch with a blank canvass? There are two main considerations. Firstly, how well does the current site represent our clients business, and its aims and goals, and does the site look professional and credible to our client’s prospects. Second, is the website built properly in terms of website promotion, SEO Unsurprisingly, if the site fails on the first criteria, it is highly unlikely it will satisfy the second. Consequently, in 75% of cases it is always preferable to begin again
