Google now ranks websites based on Mobile-first indexing.

Mobile-first indexing means Google predominantly uses the mobile version of the content for indexing and ranking. Historically, the index primarily used the desktop version of a page’s content when evaluating the relevance of a page to a user’s query. Since the majority of users now access Google Search with a mobile device, Googlebot will now primarily crawl and index pages with the smartphone agent going forward.

Mobile optimisation is nothing new but now it isn’t just an option, it is a must-have. Google’s announcement is unequivocal; mobile friendly sites will be given preferential treatment when it comes to displaying results. Mobile-first indexing means Google will use the mobile version of a web page “for indexing and ranking” to better help (primarily mobile) users find what they’re looking for.

Google’s reasoning for doing so is clear – mobile search has grown extremely rapidly, and it has to adapt to the new search landscape.
